We present you the steel Soviet helmet of the 1968 model, which at one time came to replace the SSH-60 helmet. It was created by specialists from the Leningrad Research Institute. Its design largely copies the helmet of the military personnel of the GDR - M56.
This model was in service with the USSR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania. Albania, Bulgaria. Including used during the war in Afghanistan. Detailed review of the USSR army helmet
Much stronger than the previous version - SSH-60. The standard color for the Soviet army is green (color 4BO). It has an ovoid shape. To improve the protective functions of the helmet and make it more comfortable to wear, the beveled frontal wall of the dome was slightly lengthened, and the sides, on the contrary, were shortened and bent outwards.
This is the last army helmet, which was made from a solid steel shell. Now helmets are made of multi-layered modern composite materials.
There are two straps - slings (the prototype has leather straps). A chin rest is provided so that in winter the metal clasp does not freeze to the lower part of the face.
The balaclava is fastened with four rivets. Done unpretentiously. There are no pillows as such - their role is played by four leatherette linings, on the inside of which soldier's felt is sewn in two layers. There is a smallspringing. The pillows are pulled together with a cotton cord and thus adjusted to the size of the head.
There are no ventilation holes in the helmet, which is a minus, especially in the heat. Fixation on the head is not reliable enough, during active movements the helmet fidgets, slips. In this regard, NATO models with a V-shaped strap are much more convenient - for example, HAGOR-BH01.
USSR steel helmet weighs about 1.3 kg, together with a balaclava - 1.5 g.
Like helmets SSH-40, SSH-60, protectivet from blows with a cold weapon, a stone or a steel fragment weighing 1 g, rushing at a speed of 250 m/s. However, it will not provide salvation from a direct hit by a bullet. Partially holds shot and ricochets.
In combat conditions, the helmet may not be used for its intended purpose. With its help, in particular, they dig the earth and scoop water out of the trenches.
