1. An excursion into the history of pistol and revolver cases
A holster is the most important piece of equipment after buying a weapon. Due to the huge number of models produced by different manufacturers, the Sheriff online store recommends that you start your search after choosing a pistol or revolver. What is a holster?
In ancient times, its role was played by a quiver for arrows, a leather case for any type of weapon, or a bag with special compartments.
In the 18-19 centuries, the weapon case took up a lot of space and visually looked more like a leather bag attached to a horse's saddle; its main advantages were convenience and reliability. The bag also had room for ammunition and cleaning supplies.
After the creation of firearms, specialized cases began to be used for a specific type of weapon. Although now the universal holster is very common.
Pistol holsters of the 19th and 20th centuries are the privilege of the officers, so its quality was always high, and it was not uncommon to see exclusive handmade versions with autographs of masters and excellent finishes. Elements from which gun cases were most often made: leather, metal rivets and reliable fittings. The uniform sometimes included wearing it with belts even without weapons. A striking example is the harness , as an indispensable element of officer clothing at the beginning of the 20th century.
John Moses Browning in 1903 developed one of the best pistols of the early twentieth century - the Browning FN 1903, which was equipped with an original holster that simultaneously served as a stock. For about 30 years it was an indispensable close combat weapon with a very reliable and effective wooden case.
2. Materials used in holsters
Genuine leather holster has always been the most reliable. It is elastic when stretched. Its quality does not deteriorate with prolonged use. It can be stitched with special impregnated tear-resistant threads, decoratively trimmed with pressed patterns and copper rivets.
Artificial leather is almost as good as natural, but absorbs moisture and odors worse, ignites more easily.
The disadvantage of plastic (Kydex) is that in frost, the characteristics of the polymer deteriorate sharply - at temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, it can crack from a light blow, and the difficulty in removing weapons also increases significantly.
To remove the gun with one finger, you need to press the button. The advantage of this design is a reliable rigid fixation of the pistol, which excludes its accidental loss.
Synthetic flame retardant material Cordura (a type of nylon) is affordable and practical to use. You can give any coloring, including protective. A fastex or Velcro buckle allows you to adjust the strap for a specific pistol model, as well as quickly take out the pistol and hide it back.
Currently, almost all professional holsters for the army and law enforcement agencies are made from synthetic materials.
3. Holsters by type of carrying a pistol:
3.1 Belt holster
The method of carrying short-barreled weapons on the belt is the most common. The holster can be for both external and internal carrying of the pistol. There are instances of such equipment for two pistols, although they are not widely distributed. The angle of attachment of the gun can be from 0 to 90 degrees. When buying, we recommend trying out different options and choosing the most suitable one. In addition to the pistol itself, it is convenient to place magazines and tools for maintaining weapons on the belt. A belt holster is most often made of thick, reliable leather, powerful rivets are used, and sometimes additional elements are attached. There is a small drawback - it limits the ability to use the trouser pocket from the side on which it is located.
- For outdoor wear on the belt
- Wearing on the inside of trousers
The bracket for internal carrying of weapons allows you to carry a pistol both on the belt outside the trousers and discreetly on the inside of the trousers , while the weapon does not restrict movement and turns out to be almost invisible even in hot summertime with a minimum of clothing.
Some belt systems for attaching weapons can be worn on the belt behind the back and, of course, they can also be classified as hidden options.
American special forces also provide for wearing a pistol with a special mount on underwear. In the Sheriff store you can buy a holster for wearing on underwear (so-called body holsters ) .
- In a special waist bag
Carrying a pistol in a belt pouch can be seen as an alternative to a less common concealed carry option. In the 90s of the last century, such bags were used by traders in the markets and have lost popularity in recent years.
The Sheriff online store has comfortable specialized shoulder bags made of Cordura material with the required number of compartments.
3.2 Shoulder (operational) holster
The design of the operational (axillary) holster allows you to carry a pistol on one side, and on the other side you can attach pouches for spare magazines. Carrying comfort is maximum, because the weapon does not restrict movement, including in an operational environment. Pistol extraction speed - from 1 to 3 sec. Manufacturers pay great attention to ergonomics, material quality and the possibility of a perfect “fit” to the human physique. Often, the operational holster is universal - it fits various models of pistols, although in the last decade more and more attention has been paid to the production of special holsters for certain weapons. One of the preeminent international experts of the 20th century, Jeff Cooper, pioneered the use of the so-called Kramer shoulder holster. It is located on the side of the working hand. The gun is always at the same angle before drawing, which is very convenient. An interesting fact is that professionals do not always prefer to use a shoulder holster - this is too obvious a place to carry weapons, because it is widely promoted in action films and action films. If you like to carry your main weapon on your belt, then the operational holster will be a great place for a spare. Both the holster and magazine bag are equipped with “buttons”, and the belts are made of horsehide, which does not leave marks on clothes. For a left-hander, it is possible to use a “left” holster located under the right armpit.
We must not forget that the underarm holster implies the presence of a jacket or outerwear, i.e. it is almost impossible to wear it under a sweater.
Concealed carry holsters usually do not carry a revolver, as He:
- firstly, thick enough (hard to hide);
- secondly, the drum makes it a little difficult to slide during the excavation;
- thirdly, he is always ready for an accidental shot.
If in a hurry you unsuccessfully grab the handle, then by pulling the revolver, you can pull the trigger. By the way, for the same reason, it is quite dangerous to carry a pistol with a cartridge in the chamber under your armpit, even if it is on the safety lock.
Most operational underarm holsters offer the possibility of being worn on a belt (you just need to unfasten the extra straps).
You can buy a holster to your taste in the Sheriff store at an affordable price!
3.3. Pocket holster
A modern uniform may include a special pocket for a pistol and a magazine for it. The position of this pocket is chosen for reasons of convenience, inconspicuous location and high-speed extraction.
But this is far from the best place, because the gun is not attached to anything, but “hangs” freely, can roll over, interfere with movement.
The SHERIFF store strongly recommends carrying weapons in specialized cases !!
3.4. tactical holster
A tactical holster must meet all the requirements for military ammunition , have a color corresponding to the uniform and can be located both in one of the provided compartments of the unloading vest, and on the biceps of the right or left hand. However, the most common location in the military is the outer side of the thigh.
In this case, one belt is connected to the waist belt with a quick-release buckle. A second strap wraps around the leg, resulting in a holster that fits snugly, does not interfere with movement, the weapon is extremely quickly removed and is ready for battle in less than a second. One or two additional magazines, a tactical knife or other necessary paraphernalia can be attached near. The advantage of wearing on the hip is that the torso is free, movement is not constrained, quick access and the ability to throw off the holster in case of injury.
There is an interesting type of carrying, in which the gun is attached to the shin (below the knee) either over trousers or under trousers. This option is preferred by professional drivers and the weak half of humanity (in the presence of a long skirt).
3.5. Remote holster with mounting on a horizontal or vertical surface is as follows:
The main disadvantage is that it requires the permanent location of the owner within one or two meters from the weapon. If you leave, take the gun with you.
3.6. Holster with biometric sensor
The holster with biometric identification of the owner (the latest development of Jotto Gear) can truly be called an achievement of scientific and technological progress. Pre-programmed, it makes it possible to get a gun only to the owner. On the basis of fingerprints (up to 99 users can be programmed), "own" or "alien" is determined, it is also possible to remotely signal the remote control panel. Such a holster is recommended for wearing by the security service unit and operatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it is universal and suitable for most types of short-barreled weapons. It is convenient for fastening in the car, in the office to furniture.
The operational holster and belt holster are in the greatest demand among Ukrainian weapon enthusiasts. Each of them has many modifications and different versions.
4. Classification of holsters by type of construction:
4.1. Closed holster
The figure below shows a standard closed-type belt holster for a Makarov pistol , which also fits 1 magazine and a ramrod (wiping). The kit also comes with a pistol strap that provides attachment to the trouser belt, consisting of a strap, a carabiner and a loop for the trouser belt.
4.2. open holster
This is a holster with an open weapon handle .
4.3 Mounting the gun on a special bracket (plastic or metal)
Metal fasteners are most often used by professional athletes in training and competitions. It is ergonomic and comfortable, it can be on a magnetic or push-button clasp, which allows you to instantly get a gun and make an accurate shot without interrupting breathing. At the same time, it is undesirable to consider such devices for everyday wear because of their bulkiness.
5. Caring for a leather holster or case for carrying and storing weapons:
1. With minor contamination, you can clean the product with a soft cloth, rags with a solution of ammonia, water and soap. Then rub to a shine with a flannel soaked in castor oil. In no case do not lower the leather product into water and do not use hot water even for wiping - the skin can “sit down” and then the gun will not fit in the holster.
2. Never use chemicals - solvents and surfactants.
3. It is forbidden to store leather products in the open sun - they can change color and lose elasticity.
4. When using leather straps, a harness and a leather case for weapons, excessive stretching, friction and excessive stress must be avoided. At the same time, small abrasions do not affect the properties of the skin in any way and are not a reason for premature replacement of this equipment. The service life can be more than ten years with proper storage and care.
5. By analogy with leather shoes, you can safely use the usual colorless shoe cream to improve the external condition.
6. The holster may require prior "lapping" for a particular weapon. Subsequently, the skin, if it is not excessively thick, takes on the necessary shape and fits perfectly with your pistol.
