Choosing a military uniform is not an easy task. Clothing for the army varies by season, by type, by properties (wind and moisture protection, combustibility), when choosing military clothing, you need to take into account the type of fabric, pay attention to accessories and other little things. In this section there are a number of special terms, including English ones, by looking at their main set (camouflage colors, types of special fire-resistant and water-repellent fabrics), you can feel more confident when choosing a uniform. Our military clothing store offers you to buy any of these camouflage clothing and even NATO uniforms.
1. Types of military uniform.
The complete nomenclature list of clothing for the military includes a considerable number of things - these are several dozen items, not counting shoes and hats . The main set includes: cotton underwear, socks, cotton insulated underwear, summer field jacket and trousers, insulated field jacket, insulated trousers. It can be a camouflage or solid color uniform, made of non-combustible materials, in addition, clothing should not get wet.
The summer camouflage uniform should be resistant to the sun's rays, have a small weight, and easily remove the natural body fumes. The summer uniform usually consists of two layers: underwear and a suit - a shirt or a light tunic plus trousers.
Winter and demi-season camouflage uniforms are subject to the principle of layering. The bottom layer is a special linen, the function of which is to absorb and remove moisture. The middle layer is a tunic, shirt, light jacket jacket, its function is to remove moisture to the outside and keep warm. And the top layer with the function of protection against adverse weather conditions.
A variant of this form can be considered the costume known in the post-Soviet territories "Gorka" . Precisely because it was developed specifically for units deployed in the mountains, it has excellent protection against wind and moisture.
Thermal underwear is a special underwear made of a special synthetic or combined fabric with special hygienic properties that allows the body to "breathe" - the fabric easily passes moisture and retains heat well, you will not freeze in such underwear even in the most severe frost. Thermal underwear is worn under a winter camouflage uniform .
Usually it is a long-sleeved T-shirt and underpants. The fabric in a very warm thermal underwear is fleecy inside. Some types of thermal underwear are made from fabrics of different composition for different areas of the body. These underwear are always sewn with the seams facing out and they are flat. Sometimes thermal underwear is made without a single seam. If the underwear is intended for daily wear, natural materials are added to it: wool, down or cotton.
A vest (t-shirt, light jacket) - together with shorts, replaces underwear or serves as an alternative to thermal underwear. High-quality cotton vests perfectly retain body heat (winter ones - from the inside, they resemble a “terry” towel in their structure), there are also summer vests. Unlike a vest, T-shirts come in both long and short sleeves. These items of clothing should be made of natural cotton fabric or high-quality knitwear.
Tactical camouflage trousers are distinguished by special belts, they come with integrated knee protection . Winter uniform trousers should be comfortable: not hinder movement, keep warm, not get wet from snow or rain. Pay attention to pockets, they should be designed so that snow does not get inside. For a winter military uniform, plastic fittings can be considered trouble-free - fastex, Velcro, plastic zippers. Summer versions of army trousers are usually sewn from a special rip-stop fabric, the winter version is often fleece.
" Windbreaker " and " raincoat " - the Russian names for these types of outerwear speak for themselves. This is a light (possibly elongated) jacket, its mandatory functions are wind protection, water resistance. Windbreakers and raincoats should be well ventilated (using special holes or using modern fabrics), a mandatory attribute is a hood (usually hidden in a special compartment with a zipper or buttons). Windbreakers and raincoats are worn over warm and well-breathable fleece shirts or thermal underwear. A windbreaker is often a variant of Softshell clothing, while a raincoat is more of a Hard-shell type.
Jacket - a jacket (jacket, jacket, jacket) light summer or warm winter. This military uniform is field, everyday and full dress. One of the most common modern materials for sewing tunics is the fabric, which in English is called ripstop.
Pea coat - initially warm uniform of the naval forces, a double-breasted jacket with a black cloth collar. In the broad sense of the word, a pea jacket means a warm military jacket with a faux fur or synthetic winterizer lining, with a hood or a high collar, in camouflage or protective colors.
Cloak-tent - a waterproof cape with a collar-hood. It can be used as a camouflage awning, as a small tent (two panels of the raincoat can be laid out in a tent with larger dimensions, sometimes pegs, stretch marks, rope are included in the kit). Raincoat-tent protects from any bad weather. It can also be used to carry the wounded, serve as bedding or a blanket.
Cloak-cape - a sleeveless cloak with slits for the arms, with a detachable hood, with a folding collar. It is sewn from rubberized waterproof fabric of a protective color or camouflage .
2. Fabrics for military uniforms and clothing recommendations
If you see the term Hard Shell (literal translation from English. - hard shell or hard shield) - this means that you have in your hands, by and large, a waterproof and wind-resistant material.
Hard Shell is a generic and popular name for a number of modern materials and technologies. Hard Shell is both PVC and Gor-Tex. Hardshell protects from rain and wind, but not from the cold. Hardshell is outerwear, under such a Hard Shell windbreaker or jacket, you must definitely wear thermal underwear or a cotton tunic , a fleece shirt.
The Hard Shell military uniform is best used for transitional seasons - autumn, spring, or for a relatively warm rainy winter. Hard Shell will successfully protect you from any precipitation, and thermal underwear will not let you freeze.
Its antipode is Softshell (from English. Soft - soft). These are the so-called "breathable" fabrics, which remove the natural evaporation of the body and at the same time protect against light rain or fog. Such Softshell clothing can be used in winter or summer.
The innovative material Shark Skin Softshell is popular with climbers and yachtsmen - this is a three-layer membrane fabric Soft Shell (Windblocker - Blocking Wind). Trousers , jackets , windbreakers are usually sewn from this fabric. Shark Skin fabric type - Shark Skin, or rather its imitation, due to the special manner of weaving the fibers. Shark Skin Softshell fabric has a high vapor wicking ability, moisture resistance varies. Typically made from viscose and acetate, the very first Shark Skin was made entirely from natural fibers of mohair, wool and silk.
You can buy such camouflage clothes in Dnepropetrovsk on Artemma, 9 - Sheriff store.
Fleece (Fleece) - synthetic knitwear (polyester). It is light, “breathes” well, elastic, dries quickly, retains heat-insulating properties even when wet, hypoallergenic, resistant to temperature - hardly ignites. The disadvantage is that it is easily electrified and quickly gathers dust.
TIP: Wash any clothes that you are going to use in combat conditions only with organic powders. Look for a variety of "green" brands of phosphate-free liquid and dry powders (such as those based on citrus oil). You can also wash with special soap (ordinary "household" or based on ox bile, it is more expensive, but very effective). Due to the fact that phosphate powders are hardly washed out of the fabric and remain in its structure, clothes simply “glow” on Night Vision Devices .
Coolmax (Kulmaks) first went on sale in 1986. Coolmax is a polyester-based material, a very lightweight fabric developed by DuPont. A feature of the fabric is special fibers that pass moisture well, bring it to the surface, from where it quickly evaporates, because, in addition, the fabric dries very quickly and does not absorb odors. Coolmax clothing is comfortable even in the hottest weather. Now Coolmax produces a subsidiary of DuPont - Invista. The same thing that produces the world-famous Cordura material (strong fabric for bulletproof vests and unloadings ).
Ripstop (ripstop, stop gap) - a special technique makes the structure of the ripstop fabric more dense and durable, the fabric is light. The threads are introduced, crossing, at a distance from each other. Durable nylon is used as part of reinforcing threads, and viscose, cotton, silk, and polyester are usually taken as the basis.
The fabric does not diverge at the site of small tears, the hole or cut does not increase, which is important for military uniforms. Ripstop has different indicators of impermeability and resistance to water. Of the minuses: ripstop is not resistant to fire, which means it is highly flammable. The fabric varies from soft and silky to touch, to rustling papery and rough to the touch.
TIP: to determine whether the fabric melts, whether it has a high combustibility, or is almost unaffected by high temperature, it is sometimes possible by ear. Fabric that makes a rustling sound is more likely to be flammable. But it is best to read the instructions before buying, ask about the name of the fabric, the manufacturer, or, in the end, consult with the shop assistant.

Fire resistance requirements for military uniforms
For clothing that is used in combat conditions, meeting these requirements assumes that the material from which the camouflage uniform is made does not support combustion. As long as there is fire, the fabric deteriorates, burns, melts, and chars. And as soon as the source of fire disappears, the fabric goes out.
Often, raincoats, windbreakers and other similar types of clothing, sewn from moisture-resistant materials, either burn or melt when exposed to fire. Unfortunately, in both cases, a person gets burned. When choosing military uniforms made of moisture-resistant fabrics, make sure that these clothes can be easily removed in case of an extreme fire situation (for example, choose clothes with Velcro or buttons).
Flame retardant fabrics are often susceptible to organic decomposition, fungus and mold. Roughly speaking, the fabric can begin to rot if it is not properly dried.
Opportunities to combine qualities that are opposite in action have not yet appeared, and the impregnation of a moisture-resistant material is nonsense. You can not impregnate something that is repellent to moisture. Because of this, materials that are resistant to water are usually prone to burning.
There are various impregnations that support fire resistance and moisture resistance. That is, if a cotton fabric is impregnated with a fire-resistant solution, then the cotton will not support combustion. However, such impregnations do not have a long-term effect - with each washing or getting wet, they lose their properties.
3. Accessories for military uniform
Buttons - usually buttons are used on small parts of clothing, in particular on pockets and collars. They are quick and easy to put on and take off. Buttons on military uniforms must be durable and reliable, no matter what material they are made of, metal or plastic.
Fasteks - convenient at any time of the year, trident-type fasteners are made of high-quality plastic. The responsible manufacturer conducts serious tests of these fittings.
Velcro - modern textile fasteners such as "burr" - Velcro or Velcro. Their drawback is a characteristic noise, in case you need to remain unnoticed, this noise can become a serious hindrance. Over time, Velcro clogs with various textile debris and lose some of their functional abilities. Without sewing preparation, they cannot be replaced.
Buttons are trouble-free, they practically do not deteriorate, minus buttons - a waste of time fastening. But the buttons are hopeful, they can be easily replaced with new ones or fixed if a breakdown occurs.
Lightning (zipper, zipper) provides tightness, zippers are reliable, and if they are really high quality, they will last a long time. But again, they cannot be quickly replaced or repaired. Metal zip fasteners can fail in the cold, close tightly, however, modern versions of these fasteners are made from special alloys or from durable plastic. There is another drawback when using zippers on outerwear, which can make you feel uncomfortable, for example, if it is formal wear. When tilted, the lightning often arches, forming an unaesthetic "bubble".

5. Varieties of fabrics and colors of military uniforms
Multicam (Multicam) - a universal camouflage pattern that is suitable for many terrains and landscapes, first used in 2002. Color Multicam developed in the US military laboratories.
Multicam served as a transitional link when changing camouflage : desert DCU ( Desert Camouflage Uniform) and woodland camouflage BDU (Battle Dress Uniform), which were previously used by the US Armed Forces. In this camouflage change, Multicam lost out to the ACUPAT (army camo universal pattern) camouflage, but, nevertheless, continues to be used by the US Special Operations Command and other military units. This type of camouflage is allowed for free sale.
As for the UK, after a successful operation in Afghanistan, it was decided to use this color scheme (MultiCam) as the basis of the new Multi-Terrain camouflage pattern for the British armed forces to replace the desert DPM . Since 2013 MTP camouflage has been designed for missions in mixed terrain. It works well in the desert, in the forest, in the mountains and against the backdrop of the urban landscape.
A-TACS - A-TACS camouflage pattern was developed by the American company Digital Concealment Systems (DCS) in 2010 and presented at the exhibition of military uniforms and equipment. A-TACS specialists have 15 years of experience in the development of camouflage. The creators of camouflage have abandoned the traditional approach to its concept. Instead of rounded spots, ladders of pixels and other geometric shapes that are unusual for nature, A-TACS uses a blurry image, shapeless spots that smoothly transition from one to another and merge, superimposed on each other. This principle was called "revolutionary", and they gave it the name pattern within a pattern - "a pattern within a pattern." Large patterns consist of micropatterns that merge into groups, in turn, a micropattern consists of individual pixels. This principle of drawing a picture allows you to create a kind of 3-D effect.
There is a series of camouflage A-TACS of three color options:
A-TACS AU (Arid Urban) - urban environments and sandy landscapes (brown);
A-TACS FG (Foliage Green) - for summer and spring green conditions, in the forest (green);
A-TACS LE (Law Enforcement) - for law enforcement units (gray);
AT AU (A-TACS Arid Urban, Arid City) - This camouflage is made up of shades of "tan" (light brown) taken from the urban environment, varying ground tones with slight inclusions of green.
AT FG (A-TACS Foliage Green, Green Foliage) - this camouflage variant uses mainly different shades of green that can be found in forests, different shades of the color of the earth. The A-TACS FG has been designed to operate effectively in temperate latitudes, over the widest possible range.
Mossy Oak - a special type of camouflage, realistic camouflage - the pattern on the fabric copies the surrounding landscape. Mossy Oak (translated from English. - "mossy oak") - a company founded in 1986 in the United States. The brand is from Mississippi. Mossy Oak is a manufacturer and developer of original, diverse camouflage clothing . Mossy Oak introduces new pattern making technology.
Digital design and special printing technology have made Mossy Oak incredibly realistic in color and pattern, and excellent masking performance. From 1986 to 2013, Mossy Oak developed 18 authentic camouflage patterns.
TAN is a camouflage color that is one tone paler than brown. The name comes from the word "tannum" / "tannum" - a substance that was contained in oak bark and was used for leather dressing. The first mention of this color in English appeared in 1590. Similar or similar colors are tan, coffee-with-milk, beige. For example, tan is the color of the berets of the United States Army Rangers and the Canadian Special Forces Regiment.
Coyote Brown (Brown Coyote) is sometimes interpreted as Coyote Tan - a color that is widely used both on its own and in combination with colors in camouflage patterns.
Digital or Pixel Camouflage
CADPAT (Canadian Disruptive Pattern) - Canadian Distorting Silhouette. This is digital camouflage , a pattern made up of "pixels": rectangles, small squares and "ladders". The camouflage pattern is completely generated by a computer program. The troops of the Canadian Army began to switch to pixel camouflage back in 1997, and the “digital” completely replaced the option of a single-color uniform in 2005.
TW (Temperate Woodland ) - camouflage for forests and green spaces in temperate climates. It is a mixture of olive, bright green, brown and dark gray. Has good camouflage characteristics.
MARPAT (short for MARine PATtern) is a digital camouflage pattern used by the United States Marine Corps. The MARPAT design is based on the Canadian CADPAT digital camouflage pattern .
MARPAT Tan MARPAT Woodland (Forest) MARPAT Desert (Desert).
ACU UCP - ACU (Army Combat Uniform is the current variant of the US infantry uniform). UCP (Universal Camouflage Pattern) - universal camouflage pattern .
It is a mixture of grey, green and tan (Desert Sand 500, Urban Gray 501 and Foliage Green 502). Camouflage works equally well in the desert, forest and city conditions.
The color scheme consists of a bluish gray, sandy and bright green pixel pattern that gets darker or lighter depending on exposure to sunlight. Black shadows in this camouflage were excluded, as they are visible both to the naked eye and with the help of optics . The pure black color in the camouflage pattern creates good visibility for night vision devices due to the creation of contrast, so the creators try to use different shades of gray: from the lightest to almost black.
New Ukrainian military uniform
Something similar is a new form of the Ukrainian army , the camouflage pattern of which can be called "pixel" or "digit", in foreign analogues - "digital".
