6. Where to buy ammunition for pneumatics ?
Got an air gun ? Now you need ammo . In most cases, pneumatics have a caliber of 4.5 mm (a larger caliber at a speed of >100 m/s already requires registration). In reality, balls for repeating pistols have a caliber of 4.3 mm. This makes it easy to feed them from the magazine into the barrel (chamber). For most guns, both 4.3 (4.32 mm in English and American standards) and 4.5 mm ammunition can be used, because. the ammunition feed mechanism does not depend much on the presence of a gap between the ball and the barrel.
Pneumatic weapons cannot boast of high shooting accuracy, but they are very convenient to use.
Ammunition manufacturers do not separate rifled and smoothbore pneumatics, you can use the same bullets. However, in a smoothbore, coated balls (galvanized or copper-plated) are most often used, and in a rifled one, all types of bullets, except for pure steel ones (they spoil the barrel).
Steel balls are cheaper than bullets and are used in some air rifles and most handguns as long as the muzzle energy does not exceed 3 joules. There are not so many varieties of such ammunition.
1. Bullets for pneumatic weapons with a rifled barrel and smoothbore.
1.1 Standard ammunition for pneumatics.
1.1.1 Plain unsheathed steel balls BBs
Steel balls are quite common, but they have a significant drawback - they scratch the barrel. Imported explosives often have shape defects, manufacturers even try to reduce them, but the accuracy of the shot suffers from this.
That is why steel balls are coated with zinc or copper - Softer metal is better and more delicate in contact with the steel of the barrel.
1.1.2 Galvanized balls
Of course, many will say that zinc coating is better than no coating at all, but even here it is not so simple. Such a shell, although not always, can peel off, subsequently the bullet rusts, the rust clogs the barrel and the accuracy of the shot drops even more.
1.1.3 Steel copper-plated balls
Practice shows that copper-plated balls are better for the condition of the weapon, and also please with the characteristics when shooting. Our site has imported and domestic ammunition. If you choose among foreign samples, we recommend that you try, for example, the products of " Crosman ".
1.1.4 Round lead BBs (Round)
Lead bullets are different. Characteristic properties:
- Possibility to use in multiply charged ammunition supply mechanisms.
- Good penetrating ability.
They are mainly used in pistols with a rifled barrel (spring magazine or hopper). Due to the spherical shape, the mass is concentrated at one point (in the center). Lead bullets of 4.5 mm caliber have a slightly larger diameter - from 4.55 mm to 4.65. This is due to the fact that a soft lead bullet with an increased diameter locks the barrel more tightly, which minimizes the breakthrough of compressed air.

You can buy ammunition at the Sheriff store at an affordable price !
1.2 Hollow bullets
Pneumatic revolvers with a rifled barrel are much smaller than "ball" ones, but there are more than enough rifles that shoot a wide variety of bullets.
1.2.1 Cap bullets
Made by stamping. Very light bullets - their weight is only 0.40 g. Empty lead glass , convex bottom. Penetrating power is much less than that of explosive balls. Used for shooting for fun from a short distance (4-10 meters). You can find bullets from some manufacturers that are almost equal in quality to bullets of the "diabolo" type.
1.2.2 Volanchikovye
Volanchik bullets are perfectly stabilized due to their shape. Their center of gravity is shifted a little closer forward, and the center of aerodynamic pressure is located almost near the tail. Therefore, such charges do not tumble in flight. There are many variants of shuttle-shaped bullets. Below is a brief overview of some of them.
Bullets Diabolo
They look like 2 cones inserted into each other, thanks to which friction is minimized. Proper design allows you to achieve high stability during flight.
The head gauge is approximately 4.47mm. The back (skirt) - 4.76. Total weight - 0.44-0.66 g. But there are also larger ones, these are already designed for rifles. The skirt is of the same type for most of these bullets, under the influence of gas it is pressed against the walls inside the barrel, but the tip can be of different shapes, below we will consider the purpose of certain types of tips in the "diabolo".
They are usually made by stamping or rolling out. The most expensive are stamped ones - their quality is higher, they are smooth, less susceptible to air resistance.
When running in, the bullets get teeth on the side surface (notches).
To improve the hardness of lead bullets , manufacturers add antimony and sometimes silicon or tin.

flat
Bullets with a flat tip are also called match or sports bullets. Used in shooting at paper targets at a short distance. They are characterized by low penetration, but good accuracy at a distance of up to 10 m. When hit, they leave a smooth round hole. They are useless over long distances, as they lose speed from high air resistance.
Bullets with a flat front are very convenient for sports and training shooting, because. they cut a clear hole in the target, which is important in determining the results.
The Sheriff online store recommends them for shooting training in children's sports clubs and schools. Unlike flat-tipped bullets , pointed bullets "push" the paper of the target, and the balls tear it, so in both cases it is difficult to count, since it is not always clear whether the circle line in the target is broken or not.
Hemispherical (Doomed, Round Nose)
The most versatile. They look like badminton shuttlecocks. High accuracy at a distance of 30 meters or more, stabilization during flight, good accuracy at medium distances and sufficient penetrating power. Ideal for training and recreational target shooting.
Rounded (Domed)
The aerodynamic resistance of such bullets is the lowest, very high accuracy at a distance of more than 30 meters, the penetrating ability is satisfactory. They perform well in hunting.
Pointed
They have the deepest penetration, average accuracy and good penetration.
Pointed or "tapered" bullets are similar in performance to Domed bullets, but lose accuracy at long range if the bullet has a symmetrical cone. For example, some Gamo bullets have such a cone and performance is good at a distance of up to 40 meters inclusive. The stability on the trajectory is much higher than that of balls, but at high speeds (at least 200 m / s) like powerful rifles, such bullets are not recommended.
Expansive (Hollow Point or Destroyer)
These are "unfolding" bullets with medium aerodynamic drag and increased shock effect. The further the target is, the more difficult it is for them to open up - there may not be enough energy.
If powerful pneumatics are used, then expansion bullets are the most interesting in terms of their capabilities. They have a specific tip that opens during flight. At the same time, the diameter of the bullet increases and, falling into small animals and birds, they have a sharp shock effect. All the energy of the bullet is completely consumed in a short time, which is why an air rifle must have a high muzzle velocity.
1.3 Bullets with an internal core (sub-caliber bullets).
They are a sleeve (plastic or lead), into which a steel core protruding by a couple of mm is inserted.
In some cases, such bullets have a core not made of steel, but of another
enough solid material. For example, unlike steel, brass is much more convenient in processing and pressing.
High penetrating power is due to the design feature and the presence of a solid core. The tip can be spherical, conical, ogival and flat. The power of the conical core is 5 times greater than that of a regular ball or just a lead bullet. Bullets with a plastic case are usually more stable in flight.
1.4 Pyrotechnic bullets.
"Explosive" bullets are also called pyrotechnic, they contain a detonating charge and an outer shell of lead or plastic. Upon hitting the target, such a bullet deforms, the contents explode loudly and begin to ignite or spark. The "stuffing" is usually made on the basis of components that include barthollet salt and its derivatives. Such a bullet has the shape of a cylinder with a rounded end. The detonating agent is sealed with plastic at the bottom of the bullet.
These ammunition are also called sighting , but they are, of course, more suitable for recreational shooting, for example, at empty bottles or cans.
1.5 Darts.
Darts made of steel and brass have a pointed tip and a tail feather made from a brush or a plastic cylinder.
They are used for recreational shooting at silicone or felt objects, single-shot air rifles and some large -cylinder gas pistols . The caliber of the darts is 4.4-4.5 mm, their length is from 2.5 to 3.0 centimeters. Darts are used in smoothbore pneumatics - in rifled weapons, the barrel can be damaged. In flight, the dart spins, because of this, the accuracy is insufficient, and the firing range of such projectiles leaves much to be desired.

2. Characteristics of ammunition.
Expansion - when hitting a target, the bullet tends to deform, expanding in diameter. The degree of expansion or increase in cross-sectional area is called expansivity. A bullet with the greatest expansion causes a state of shock, for example, in a rodent that it hits. That is why this parameter is the most important when hunting.
Penetration is one of the most important characteristics of a bullet. This parameter indicates how deep the ammunition has entered the target material. The shape of the projectile and hardness directly affects the penetration depth, i.e. To. the more streamlined the bullet and the harder it is, the higher the penetration, respectively, the higher the penetrating characteristics of the bullet.
Penetration and expansion are inversely proportional, that is, the more the diameter of the bullet increases, the less deeply it penetrates the target body. Penetration is maximum for a round object - a ball, since it does not have internal cavities subject to deformation. The streamlined shape of the ball also contributes to this. It is easy to understand that he also has the smallest expansiveness.
If the head part is deformed to the maximum, then, accordingly, the bullet has maximum expansion. Additional resistance when hitting the target can be achieved by changing the configuration of the head of the bullet, making a kind of recess in front - "hollow point". 70% of the bullet's energy is used to deform it. When hunting thick-finned birds, bullets with high expansion are ineffective, they sharpen in feathers without harming internal organs.
Keep in mind the optimal penetration-expansion ratio when choosing ammunition for your air rifle or pistol . So, for practice shooting at bottles and cans, we recommend pellets and other solid ammunition. For shooting rats and small animals unfriendly to people, we recommend highly expansive bullets made of soft material. Birds are best hunted with bullets that have 50/50 stats.
3. How to choose pneumatic ammunition.
A few tips from professionals when buying and using ammunition:
1. When choosing ammunition for airguns , pay attention only to trusted manufacturers. This will help you not to damage the inner surface of the barrel and keep it in working condition for a long time.
2. Bullets should be shiny, free of deposits or traces of oil.
3. Stamped bullets should not have noticeable seams and notches.
4. The skirt of the bullet must not be dented or cut off.
5. Make sure that all bullets from one box are exactly the same.
6. If you don't know which air rifle or pistol ammunition to choose, purchase several options with different characteristics or products from different manufacturers to try. After shooting and getting certain results, you will understand where to stop.
7. For plinking (recreational shooting at cans, empty bottles)
ylkam and so on.) It is best to use bullets of both medium weight and very heavy ones, even if the speed of the shot does not exceed 130 m / s.
8. For hunting, use highly deformable bullets with high expansion.
9. Light bullets are good for shooting at short distances.
4. Air ammo storage.
1. Carefully inspect the bullets you wish to use, they must be clean and as close to perfect as possible. In the box with bullets there should be no production waste, chips, sawdust, crumbs.
2. Store ammunition in a clean, dry area.
3. Ammunition must be out of the reach of children.
4. If possible, purchase a safe - it will reliably protect you from unpleasant accidents.
5. Lead bullets are quite soft. Do not store them near heating appliances, as they can be slightly deformed and will no longer have an ideal shape.
6. Don't drop ammo boxes. All for the same reason - the softness of the metal. Upon impact, they are deformed, and the accuracy of shooting is reduced.
7. Look at the date of manufacture of the ammunition, if it is not indicated, try to find out from the seller when they went on sale.
Ammunition that has lain for several years in a warehouse or on a display case warm from lamps will always be worse than those that are made recently.
